Discussion: How to get two million tonnes of RCN from origin to processing in good quality and reliably?
About 1.7 million tons and 300,000 tons of raw cashew moves from west Africa and east Africa respectively to Vietnam and India every year. This trade is valued at US 3.5 billion. There is wide deviation between shipped and landed quality, if cargo is not dried properly. Many times, operational and infrastructural constraints lead to delay in shipment. Price fluctuations during the transit time, results in renegotiations and at times, default. Is there a way to resolve these and make the trade less speculative?

Walking the tightrope - balancing government policy and market players interests in volatile cashew markets.
Governments in cashew producing countries are keen on organising the raw cashew sector and encourage processing and value addition. Therefore, long term policies are aligned in that direction. While these objectives are to be fully supported it is difficult to align policy with volatile markets – Are policies always well aligned with the end markets? Do Governments appreciate the impact of their policy decisions? Who pays if/when they get it wrong? Is it market players duty to assist governments with policy or just to lobby in their own interest? Should governments consult market players on price and policy decisions?"

Raw cashew business has grown to over USD 6 billion thanks to growth in production and increase in price. Of this, about USD 4 billion is cross-border trade. Despite the growth, the trade has remained bilateral and prone to risk of defaults of payment or promised quality. Is there a need for a global body for raw cashew to streamline processes, standardise procedure, evolve a quick dispute resolution mechanism and reduce overall risks?
